Information about Programmes to be Offered at SEKUCo for the 2010/11 Academic Year
undergraduate degree programme at the Sebastian Kolowa University College (SEKUCo) of Tumaini University for the 2010/2011 Academic Year.
I: BACHELOR OF EDUCATION SPECIAL NEEDS (BEdSN) PROGRAMME
The programme was launched in October 2007 and it offers different courses in General Education, Inclusive Education, English Language & Literature, Kiswahili, French, Communication Skills, Mathematics, Computer literacy, Geography, History, Development Studies, Economics, Political Science & Administration. In the forthcoming 2010/2011 academic year, courses in the following subjects will be offered: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In addition to the above courses, this programme offers the unique opportunity to study Special Needs Education courses and acquire in-depth knowledge on Visual Impairments, Hearing Impairments, Speech disorders, Cognitive Disabilities, Autism, Multiple disabilities and Behaviour disorders. As a teacher, educator, Regional/District Education Officer or consultant, the BEdSN graduate will be highly equipped to make the ideal “Education for All” a reality for learners who have disabilities, thereby making the Tanzanian school system truly inclusive.
Entry Requirements
- A. Direct Entry Scheme
To be eligible for consideration for admission through direct entry, a candidate must have obtained: Ordinary Level Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E.) or the East African Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) or equivalent with credit passes in three approved subjects obtained prior to the sitting of the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) or equivalent
AND
An Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) (or equivalent) with at least two principal level passes in appropriate subjects with a total of 4.5 or more points.
B. Equivalent Entry Qualifications.
1. Possession of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) or East African Secondary Education (Ordinary Level) or Equivalent with at least three credits or five passes in approved subjects
AND
2. Holder of a Diploma in Education or Special Needs or Special Needs Education from a recognized/accredited institution with an average grade of B+ or above.
C. Mature Age Entry
Applicants eligible through Mature Age Entry to the programme are those who:
- Are at least twenty-five (25) years old
- Have obtained at least three credits at C.S.E.E.
- Have attended a course, preferably in Education or Special Needs Education of not less than 9 months duration.
- Sit and Pass the Mature Age Entry Examination.
II: BACHELOR OF LAWS (LL.B) PROGRAMME
The LL.B. programme was started in October 2008 aiming at producing high quality law graduates who, upon attendance of the Tanzania Law School for practical legal training subsequent to their graduation from SEKUCo, will make the ideal “timely justice” a reality for all. As they perform various duties as judicial officers, legal practitioners, civil servants, in-house lawyers or judicial advisors, the graduates should be driven by the intent that all people should be served properly according to the law. It covers the curriculum of LL.B. as taught in other universities in Tanzania but has an additional course of Disabilities and the Law which gives the student crucial insights on the situation of people affected by physical, sensory, intellectual, economic and social disabilities in the society.
A candidate shall be eligible for consideration for admission into the LL.B Programme of SEKUCo if she/he meets the following requirements:
A. Direct Entry (“A” Level Candidates).
Candidates must have met the following requirements:
(a) Ordinary Level Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E.) or the East African Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) or equivalent with credit passes in three approved subjects obtained prior to the sitting of the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) or equivalent.
AND
An Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) (or equivalent) with at least two principle level passes in appropriate subjects with a total of 4.5 or more points.
AND
(b) Received a “C” grade or above in English at “O” Level or a Principal pass in English at “A” Level.
- Equivalent Qualifications
Candidates must:
(a) Possess Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) or East African Secondary Education (Ordinary level) or Equivalent with at least three credits or five passes in approved subjects.
AND
(b) Received a “C” grade or above in English at “O” Level or a Principal pass in English at “A” Level;
AND
- Earned a Diploma in Law with Second Class classification or above from an Accredited College or University;
OR
- Earned a Certificate in Law from an Accredited College or University with Distinction.
III: BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ECO – TOURISM AND NATURE
CONSERVATION (BSc ENC) PROGRAMME
We started to offer this programme in October 2009. It is designed to equip undergraduate students with managerial skills and a holistic ecosystem approach in dealing with complex problems related to ecotourism, nature conservation and the environment at local, national and global level. At the end of the three-year programme, the BSc ENC graduates should be capable of taking professional and leadership positions in eco-tourism, environmental protection and the use of natural resources in governmental and non-governmental sectors. Courses offered include Geology, Geomorphology, Land Use Systems, Microbiology, Watershed Conservation, Soil Sciences, Meteorology, Ecology, Tourism, Business and Marketing.
- A. Direct Entry
To be eligible for consideration for admission through direct entry, a candidate must have obtained Ordinary Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E.) with a minimum of 3 credits passes obtained prior to the sitting of the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) or East African Certificate of Education (Advanced Level).
AND
Two Principal Level passes in the following relevant subjects in Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) or equivalent: Chemistry, Physics, Biology/Botany/Zoology, Mathematics, Geography, Agriculture. Candidates without a Principal level pass in Mathematics should have passed Basic Applied Mathematics at ‘A’ level. The sum of the points from the two principal level passes should not be less than 2.5.
- B. Equivalent Qualifications
- Diploma in a relevant field of Physical, Chemical and Biological Sciences such as Forestry or Beekeeping or Wildlife Management or Agriculture from recognized colleges passed at Second Class (Credit) or above passed at the level of Second Upper (B+).
AND
- At least five passes at “O” level and should include passes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography, Physics, Agriculture and Biology/Botany/Zoology.
- C. Mature Age Entry
Applicants eligible for mature age admission to this degree programme must:
- Be at least twenty-five (25) years old.
- Have obtained at least three credits or five passes at C.S.E.E. in relevant subjects.
- Be in possession of one principal pass and a subsidiary in the relevant A-Level subjects.
- Sit and pass the Mature Age Entry Examination.

- It is an offence to submit false information of any kind. Any applicant who will be discovered to have submitted forged certificates or any other such information will not under any circumstances be considered, additionally appropriate legal action will be taken against him/her.
- Those who will be admitted into the University College are strongly advised to arrange for loans from the Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB) or make private financial arrangements.
