On 24th July 2009, a workshop on CO-TEACHING was conducted at the Sebastian Kolowa University College. The workshop was led by Prof. Marilyn Kaff and Ms. Susan Dillinger, both from the International Association of Special Education as well as Brenna, Prof. Marilyn’s daughter. Forty one teachers from public and private schools from Lushoto District and the city of Tanga participated. There were secondary school teachers from Ubiri and Lwandai Secondary Schools and primary schools participants from Lushoto. Also, teachers from Irente School for the Blind, Irente Rainbow School participated and the Youth with Disabilities Community Programme (YDCP) in Tanga. Dr. Paul Nwaogu and Mr. Afizai Vuliva from SEKUCo were moderators.

Here are some comments from the participants:

We have never participated in a workshop of this kind! We should do these things more often!
The workshop was very good! We all appreciated it and felt it was relevant to our context. The facilitators were well prepared. They managed very well the blend of participants. We worked in groups, moving from one room to another. Thank you very much for the invitation!

This workshop was a special one. We realized how important it is to involve children in learning. A child should be given the opportunity of trying to do something regardless of his or her ability!

We want to learn more. Some of the participants were disabled so the group was mixed which was good. But we need to have at least a week for such a workshop so that we can acquire enough skills. More time will also be a gain for those who have disabilities themselves.

ASANTENI SANA Marilyn, Susan and Brenna!
